Review of 'Trace of Deceit' by Karen Odden

I have thought long and hard on what to say about this award winning novel. First I loved it! Although I will make some brief comments, I think this book deserves to be read to be appreciated for its own outstanding merits.

Karen Odden turns up the heat in this gripping complex mystery to an even higher level of intensity than her previous two novels (which were pretty amazing). These well rounded lead characters leap off the page and have you following their every movements. You can see, feel and experience with great intensity everything and everyone they encounter.

The story is set around the underground Victorian England artworld. Annabel Rowe’s brother, Edwin, has been murdered. And of course, we must unravel the mystery of why, how and when. There is a two-plot arc to this story: Edwin’s death and Annabel’s character evolution. Edwin’s death leaves Annabel in a dilemma questioning the motives behind his premature end. She also suffers with her own guilt of not having made amends with him—for their sibling relationship has been poor—for reasons we soon learn.

Much is unveiled during the investigation and how Annabel comes to understand her brother’s behaviour and activities that led to his untimely death. But there is always a shining light in Karen’s books. Under all the mess and mayhem, we uncover a strong family bond that still exists. Her brother left her a clue that helps her to aid Matthew Hallam, the Scotland Yard inspector, (we met in Dangerous Duet) solve the mystery surrounding Edwin’s death.

This tight brilliant Victorian mystery of ample intrigue and suspense will have you chasing the pages (staying up all night!) to see what happens next. There are innumerable twists, turns and surprises to keep you interested to the last page. Karen, as usual, has done extensive research and her attention to detail shines like a beacon on every page, along with her shimmering atmospheric settings.

Skilful, complex plots and character development lead this to be Karen’s top recognised (award winning) story. I highly recommend this novel along with Karen’s previous two. A Victorious 5 Stars! 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
