Review of 'A Dangerous Duet' By Karen Odden
A Dangerous Duet is another brilliant captivating Victorian Mystery by Karen Odden.
Daring, committed, independent Nell has a dream and she is willing to make sacrifices to achieve her goals. This includes being in places and in disguises that not only put her at the edge of danger but sometimes in the centre of it. She is a gifted pianist and desires to study at the Royal Academy of Music but there are road blocks that force her to find her own way of covering the tuition cost. She plays at the Octavian at night to earn money but it is a less than refined establishment and things there aren’t as they seem.
The shadow of her mother’s illness hangs over her, more in other minds than her own. For she has inherited her mother’s talent of being a gifted pianist but has she inherited anything else? Doctor Everett, a friend of the family, and brother, Matthew, an inspector for Scotland Yard, want to shield her from any potential threats to her life and mind but nineteen year old Nell believes she is not her mother and is in complete control of her gift.
Dark images, foreboding atmosphere, gritty backdrops are prevalent on the back streets of Victorian London and in the Octavian. Danger lurks in unsuspecting places and crosses paths with Nell as she tries to sort out her enemies and friends.
There are plenty of red herrings, suspense, distinct voices and character surprises to keep you guessing and turning the pages. I absolutely loved this atmospheric Victorian England novel. Not only has Karen researched and presented her setting well, but she has masterfully delivered on every other front. She has provided a rich tapestry of music, mystery, character and plot. I highly recommend this 5 Star read. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
