Courage… "Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World." Christopher Columbus

I have always been fascinated by Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer and navigator who in 1492 sailed across the Atlantic in search of a new route to India. As is often the case, when you leave home with visions of grand adventures, you often bump into new faces and experiences that take you on a different route than planned. The winds of change can carry you to places never imagined, as it did for Columbus. He discovered the “New Worlds” of the Americas.

While working with my award winning American cousin, Eddie Leighton, I wrote a lyric about Christopher Columbus for his album “Beyond the Door.”

“Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World.”

— Christopher Columbus

Circle’s End

Verse 1:

What of Columbus’ dreams

Soft sails and wild seas

What of the wheat gold mornings

That spilled across the waves.

He left his native shores

Conviction ruled his heart

A man led by his destiny

With vision to impart.

Chrous:

Seeking out their gold

Searching for new lands

Sweet treasure, silks and all

To spur the minds of men

Beneath a scarlet moon

Of angels’ pearls & wine

From where we are and where we’ve been

We’ve travelled far to circle’s end

Verse 2:

What of those winter nights

When plans and currents failed

When nothing but the wind inside

Kept faith upon the wheel.

When every shadow fell

Across the tides of time

A captain led his weathered crew

To the ends of earth— beyond

Bridge:

There’s so much to explore

To ponder and to claim

This high commissioned call

Leads to the Circle’s End.

Where challenges are fierce

And ventures have a price

But there beneath the distant stars

The dream of one survives.
